The Look of Sound
“The Look of Sound” series are custom paintings of the spectrograms of meaningful sounds… like a voice saying an important word or message or a new baby’s name. I got the idea when I was analyzing and editing soundwaves in a research laboratory, to investigate the cognitive mechanisms in babies' language acquisition. I was excited to be able to freeze the pure transient energy that is sound and capture it for visual inspection… so that it could be heard with the eyes! I find that soundwaves, though very real and literal, have a striking abstract beauty on canvas.
UPDATE: My most recent commissioned piece was of a man’s voice saying “Will you marry me?”, which he incorporated into his proposal to his (now) fiancé! He selected the size, background colour, and style of the painting that best suited the couple’s décor and love story.
